The Dead of Night – Here's To You
by Lieutenant Commander Crellan Kell
Ajillian Fromme sat reclined on the couch in the forward observation lounge of the USS Shiloh. She wore pleated khaki pants over her slender legs, a lime green shirt was covered by a dark brown vest inlaid with an ornate detailed Tholian silk stitching covering the front. She had returned her hair back to her preferred silver color not that much of it could be seen as it was covered with a black derby hat. AJ pulled a deck of cards from her vest pocket and opened them before taking another sip of her non-alcoholic wine. She subconsciously started shuffling the cards.
She sat quietly on the couch staring out the view ports. Her mind wandered across the Federation to another time and another place. Her mother sat in a Federation penal colony, of which she had mixed feelings. Growing up, she learned from her mother some tricks that would eventually land her in trouble as part of a mother and daughter grifting team. As such, she was always on the move. She read quickly whatever books she could get her hands on, but was often never in one place long enough to develope any lasting friendships. She was always told never to trus anyone else.
Her mother drifted easily from mark to mark and occasionally in and out of the employ of the Orion Syndicate. AJ never had anything directly to do with the syndicate, but she knew a number of people that did with mixed results.
One day her mother came home to their low rent apartment located in a bad neighborhood and she carried two tickets to the vacation paradise of Risa. AJ had been thrilled beyond anything she had known. Unfortunately the tickets came with a small price. They were being sent on a working vacation.
On Risa, was a Star Fleet Engineering Command conference. She and her mother were tasked with lifting secrets from an Admiral's guest quarters. What she didn't realize was that it was a trap. Star Fleet Intelligence Analysis Division intercepted a communique from the syndicate about the meeting, so they employed a number of agents and senior officers to conduct a counter intelligence operation.
AJ's mother pointed out the mark and kept her instructions simple. Get his brief case. She was never told what the secrets were or how important they were. Nobody ever learned for sure as to whether or not why the mother and daughter team was tasked with gathering these secrets. It wasn't long after that the two grifters were in shackles and were being escorted without fanfare off of Risa.
She sat quietly alone in her thoughts watching the stars go by and the people come and go from the lounge. She started tossing her cards at or into her derby that sat upside down by her toes. A few cards landed in the hat while other cards were laying around the hat untill she was left with one hand in her hand. The cards were dispersed in varying states of order much like her mental state. "Here's to you mom. I made it out." she whispered taking another sip of her wine.
