"This is W-One-One-Nine, approaching drop zone Delta." The co-pilot stated. "We have colony supplies SF-two-four-six through SF-three-one-oh ready to be transferred to the surface."
The officer behind him held himself steady as the shuttle continued its descent towards the surface. "Okay, crewman. Take the throttle back and engage the manoeuvring thrusters. Bring us in nice and gentle." Carlton checked the movements of the Crewman's hands as the Type 9 shuttle dropped through the thin cloud cover and into full view of the planet's surface.
"It's beautiful, sir!" The young man exclaimed as he caught sight of the rolling hills and lush vegetation, highlighted in part by narrow, barren stretches of land laid out across the surface. The slightly older Ensign, taking the role of co-pilot rolled her eyes.
"Keep your eyes on the prize, Yossarian." Carlton ordered. He knew the Ensign was ready to take command of the shuttle's controls if anything went wrong but Lieutenant Tarmikos had ordered him not to give that snippet of information away to his trainees. "If you manage to get this bird down into the designated landing zone then you'll be able to fly a mission without me holding your hand."
"Aye, sir." Yossarian replied as his hand dropped the throttle back and programmed the auto-guidance of the shuttle to the co-ordinates of the landing zone. "Co-ordinates keyed in. Auto landing sequence initiated."
"All right, Crewman." Carlton said as he pressed a button on the control panel above his head. "Stress test!"
The shuttle jolted and Carlton had to move his feet quickly to make sure he didn't keel over. The automatic pilot of the shuttle went inactive and the lurching of the craft sent the crewman forward into the console. He grunted as he pulled himself back up and checked the altometer. His hands immediately sprang into action. Where some might have frozen, he would succeed. His hands flew across the controls firing the manoeuvring thrusters of the shuttle in controlled bursts to bring the craft back under his control. As the forward thrusters fired he found himself smiling widely, seeing the ground level out and become static in front of him.
"Good job, Crewman. We'll make a pilot out of you yet." Carlton declared with the pride he felt in the young man's confidence bursting through.
